What happens in a wardrobe consult?

Well, it all starts with a form and some conversation around who you are as a person, what you do in your life and how you want to portray yourself moving forward. A chance for you to reflect on where you have been and where you are going in the future.

No-one hires a personal stylist to stay in the same look that they currently have, or in some cases have had since they were in their 20’s. A session with a stylist is aimed to educate you in your body shape/cuts that work for you and bring out your personality through clothes.

A stylist will not tell you, that you look amazing in everything, like a retail assistant might. A stylist’s job is to tell you what works, what doesn’t and why this is the case. You will gain the self esteem and confidence from the education you are given.

After the initial consultation, I come to your house, I educate you on your body shape and explain what shape/cuts of clothes work for you. I have a list of all the items that will give you a basic functioning wardrobe and from there we create a shopping list as we look through your clothes.

Depending on how many clothes you have we do about 2 or 2.5 hours of you trying on your clothes. Generally, we start with your favourite outfit. You tell me why you love it and we go from there. I find that the conversation comes organically, and I see your feelings towards your outfits in your body language.

We sort everything into keep, donate, tailor or bin quickly. It helps to have an honest person with you for this, it’s a quick process. If I see balls, holes, rips, stains, where you might “um and ah”, I have already said bin. Obviously, the final decision is yours but you have hired a stylist to improve your image.

Over the 2 hours or so you have learnt what cut tops suit you, what rise in pants, where jackets should sit, general colours that work for you, how to make your chest/bottom/tummy look bigger or smaller etc.

As we go along, I will place your clothes that are to be kept, back into your wardrobe in an organised fashion. We will also go though some styling tips, different ways to wear your current clothes, and take a few photos so you can have a reminder of what looked good. This helps when you are in a hurry and need to pull an outfit together in a rush.

At the very end I have created a shopping list of what needs to be replaced and what is missing from your wardrobe basics. After the session I will pull this together and send you a copy. You will now know what to look for in cut and colour for your next shop.

You can take the knowledge you learnt and buy the list or you can hire me to take you shopping and continue the education. There is always more to learn!

I have never had a client that has not said they weren’t complimented on their look after the session following the tips and tricks they had learnt. Self-esteem grows from the knowledge and ongoing compliments.

How about it? Are you ready for a wardrobe make over or a styling session?
