If you don't already have a portable bag hook, then look no further. I use this all the time at restaurants or when I am out. The hook keeps your bag off the floor and hanging safely next to you.
 
These ones have a padded backing to help the hook hang to the table/bench and the best bit is......the mirror! You can do a sly teeth or lipstick check without making it too obvious at the table.
